The Difference Between SEER and EER Ratings

You may have noticed SEER or EER numbers while shopping for a new air conditioner in Buford, GA, or maybe you haven’t. Either way, understanding the difference between the two will come in handy. One thing these ratings have in common though is they measure air conditioning efficiency.

What Does SEER Mean?

SEER means Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. SEER values are calculated by measuring an indoor temperature along with a range of outdoor temperatures. For the most part, SEER values will measure air conditioning efficiency throughout seasonal changes. The higher the number, the better the efficiency. Keep in mind that SEER numbers should range anywhere from 13 to 21 ur higher in modern air conditioners.

What Does EER Mean?

EER is an acronym for Energy Efficiency Ratio. You’ll often come across EER values when you’re handling smaller AC units like the ones that are placed in your window. This type of AC unit usually runs constantly throughout the day. EER ratings are based on a few factors, like high outdoor and indoor air temperatures, as well as humidity. EER numbers are more consistent than SEER numbers because of the unit’s operation frequency.

Is SEER More Important Than EER?

Both SEER and EER ratings are relevant and important. Since EER ratings are measured against an AC unit that runs consistently throughout the day, having a proper rating becomes especially important when the temperature or climate is warmer. On the other hand, SEER ratings are measured against units that turn on and off throughout the day. This makes the calculation important because of the fluctuating outdoor temperatures and climate. Overall, both ratings will help determine how the unit will hold up against the weather.

One way to determine if you’re working with quality AC products is if your SEER and EER ratings are satisfactory. You can always give Zack Hammonds – A/C, Heating and Refrigeration a call with any questions you may have.
